I just read an interesting report by the guys at the McGill university about those unsightly yellow grass patches that my dog Bailey likes to make all over my back yard.
(Now, how did the McGill guys get past Bailey, and into my yard is beyond me!?)
In a nutshell, the report said that it’s the nitrates in Bailey’s… uh, whiz that burn the grass.
If you wish to read the whiz report you can download it here (although it’s a little dry… no pun intended)
OK, Dr. Brainiac… nitrates – that’s great news! That means all I have to do is feed my dog less nitro and more Alpo, and the problem will go away, right?
Riiiight!
What To Do
Jokes aside, they actually recommend feeding the dog less protein because it breaks down to release nitrogen compounds (that’s protein that breaks down, not the dog, folks!)
Which makes sense, but that won’t actually stop the patches from appearing. It may make them less noticeable, but that doesn’t completely prevent the grass stains (argh!)
Aside from recommending to get a cat instead (yes, they actually said that!), as an alternative, they wrote, you can go after your dog with a hose and water down the urine
Whoa, stop the presses!!!
I already have to scoop Bailey’s mess when in the great outdoors… having to run around with a hose in my own back yard is where I draw the line.
Who’s the boss in this house here after all?
I don’t know about you, but I think I’ll stick with my trusty Dog Rocks after all. These things were so great at removing impurities from Bailey’s drinking water which cause nitrates to occur, I wish I knew about them way back when
OK, I know… this may have sounded like a clumsy segue, but that’s not what this post is actually about – swear to dog! (get it?.. dog?… uh, anyone?)
It’s just that the report was very timely released as I started thinking about putting a Dog Rocks page up on the site here, so it kind of sped the process up (that, plus Bailey told me to post this over the game of scrabble… – true story)
And so, there you have it – if you get them yellow patches in your own back yard, I just put the page up, so go check it out.
They rock!
OK, that’s enough bad jokes for one day – I don’t want this blog to implode onto itself…
